Winegrowing
Wine growing has been present in Slovenia since
Ancient Roman times, when the Roman soldiers brought to our parts wine
and vines. The oldest living vine in Slovenia is 200 years old and is
located in the city of Maribor. The sorts present in Slovenia are
reminding us daily that wine growing has been present here since ages
ago, for instance Malvasia, that is said to originate from Asia Minor
(Mala Azija in Slovene). Slovenia has in its rich history constantly
been conected with wine and wine culture, which was also written by
Janez Vajkkard Valvasor in Slava vojvodine krajnske (Die Ehre dess
Hertzogthums Crain) in 1689. Valvasor wrote of wine presence in
Dolenjska a region of Cviček, a wine not found anywhere else in
Slovenia. Today wine growing and wine production has become a part of
wine producers soul and is show in the quality of Slovenian wines as
well as presonal sacrifice of wine producers.
Slovenia has three
wine growing regions, Primorje, Posavje and Podravje. Slovenia today
has around 25.000 ha of vineyards, of those 13.000ha are registrated to
porduce wine. The number of wine producers in Slovenia is 1400.
Primorje
wine growing region is devided into four sub regions, Goriška Bbrda,
Vipava Valley, Kras and Slovenian Istra. In Primorje there is wine say
that goes: "Tina Turner pije biru, Fanci Malvaziju!"
Posavje
wine growing region is devided into three sub regions, Dolenjska, Bela
krajina and Bizeljsko-Sremiški sub region. Dolenjska is the biggest of
these regions, mostly because of Cviček producers. There are around
6150 Cviček producers in Slovenia. Dolenjska has a specific saying that
is somewhat true to the people in this region: "Dolenc pa mora znat,
svoj vinograd obdelvati: Če ga delal prav ne bo, bo pa pil vodo."
Podravje
wine growing region is devided into two sub regions, Slovenian Stiria
and Prekmurje. As one of the oldest region in Slovenia and home of the
odlest vine, here to is a large presance of wine culture: " En hribček
bom kupil, bom trte sadil; Prjat'le bom vabil, še sam ga bom pil."
Slovenia
is a wine rich country, where wine culture and wine lovers aren't
lacking. Many of them have gatherd in organisations such as sommeliers,
order of wine knights, judgings for wine queen of Slovenia. These and
many others show us that Slovenia has had and has a long wine history
and wine culture. Among great wine lovers in Slovenia was also Dr.
France Prešeren, who wrote in his A Toast his respect to wine:
"The vintage, friends, is over,
And here sweet wine makes, once again,
Sad eyes and hearts recover,
Puts fire in every vein,
Drowns dull care
Everywhere
And summons hope out of despair."
We wish to all wine lovers that they will forget the turmoil of everyday life with a good glass of Slovenian wine.
